Directive (EU) 2024/825 · Green Claims

Green Claims Checker: find banned environmental claims

Paste the text of your Amazon/Etsy listing or your packaging. The tool scans it for wording that becomes banned without proof from the deadline — with an explanation and legal context for each finding.

⏱ Applicable from 27 September 2026 — no transition period, no exemption for small businesses.
Not to be confused with the PPWR Declaration of Conformity. This is a different, separate EU law: Directive (EU) 2024/825 ("Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition") amends the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive and covers marketing claims — on packaging, in listing text, on the website. The PPWR, by contrast, covers the packaging itself (material, recyclability, labelling). Both laws can apply to the same product at the same time.

The text stays in your browser — nothing is sent to a server. The check runs entirely locally by keyword matching.

3 Frequently Asked Questions

Why is "climate neutral" now banned when it wasn't before?

The claim itself was never explicitly permitted — it used to be assessed case by case. From 27.09.2026, certain variants are banned outright without a case-by-case assessment: specifically when "climate neutral" is based on the purchase of CO2 certificates (offsetting) rather than an actual reduction of emissions within the company itself. That covers practically the majority of "climate neutral" labels currently used on the market.

Can I still write "recyclable"?

Yes, if it's true and you can substantiate it if challenged — the problem is blanket, unsubstantiated claims, not the term itself. Safer: get specific ("packaging is 80% PCR plastic, verified to XY") rather than staying vague.

What about our own eco-labels that we designed ourselves?

Exactly this kind of self-created or self-certified sustainability label is one of the twelve newly banned practices — regardless of wording. A label is only permitted if it's based on a recognised, independently reviewed certification scheme. This text tool cannot detect that — check your own labels/graphics separately.

Does this only apply to the German market?

The directive applies EU-wide across all 27 member states and is transposed into national law in each. The core principles are identical; enforcement details can vary by country. This checker currently only covers English-language text.

Important notice: This tool is an automated quick-check based on a fixed keyword list. It recognises known, commonly problematic wording — it does not read the text for meaning and can produce both false positives and miss genuine violations (e.g. rephrased wording, image or label claims). A "clean" result is not a guarantee of legal compliance and not legal advice. For a binding assessment of your specific claims and supporting evidence, consult a qualified professional.
